GALLE FORT HOTEL
- Winner of Conde Nast Traveller's Best New Hotels of 2005
- Famous for its cuisine
Step off a bustling narrow road opposite the indoor bazaar and neighbouring art galleries, into the impressive hotel entrance. Within two strides you have found another world. The quiet bar faces the road with only whirling fans and louvres to hide your lunchtime cocktails. Cosmpolitan shoppers and ex-pats patronise the hotel for lunch and dinner engagements prepared by the self-taught and spectacular Malaysian chef-owner. In the entrance a magnificent crystal chandelier is suspended above a powerful Jaffna temple head, just the beginning of the historic tour of antiques and artifacts that lie within the hotel. The 10 oppulently furnished rooms/suites encircle the tranquil courtyard at the rear of the building. Four of the suites adopt a theme appropriate to the Fort's heritage, namely the Portuguese Barracks, Cheng Ho Pavilion, Comte de Mauny apmt and the Blue and White Porcelain Suite. Polished teak floors throughout the building meet stone courtyards and the architecture never ceases to amaze as mezzanine floors, arched walls, corner gardens and soaring ceilings maximize the light. Outside the 21m pool takes centre stage surrounded by huge urns, original wells and water features. Lounge in the sun or retire to the shade with a book from the library. The pool pavilion is furnished with colonial style tables and chairs, allowing residents to dine al fresco on occasion, away from the main indoor restaurant. The Elephant Polo Events and Gala ball attract visitors from all around the world.
