Maharashtra's history dates back to ancient times and with the influence of Buddhism under the rule of the Mauryan emperor Ashoka, the region houses artistic caves temples home to Buddhist monks and monks of other religion also.

A centre for commerce from ancient times with links to east Africa, Mesopotamia and Aden, today the city of Mumbai is carrying forward its history as the centre of commercial activity by being the country's financial centre and busiest port.
