The park supports three main types of vegetation.The eastern most portions are mostly scrub, characterized by stunted tree growth in areas of shallow hard soil with almost no humus. The central portion comprises of tropical dry deciduous forests.Lastly the western part is tropical moist mixed deciduous forests. The avifauna in the park is over 300 bird species including commonly found Peafowl, Grey Jungle-Fowl, Pompadour Green Pigeon, Honey Buzzard, Crested Tree Swift, Crested Serpent Eagle, Blossom-headed Parakeet and Grey Hornbill. The park offers a rich and varied wildlife habitat. Two species of primate found are Common Langur and Bonnet Macaque. Among the larger carnivores are Tiger, Leopard, Wild Dog, Jungle Cat and Sloth Bear. Less common are Striped Hyaena and Jackal. Bandipur National Park is one of the best remaining habitats of the Asian Elephant. Elephants can be observed in large numbers here. A striking ecological feature of these Elephants is their seasonal migration. In the wet season when water and forage are plentiful the Elephants are evenly distributed. As summer sets in, Elephants begin to congregate along the water holes and banks of rivers. The Mouse Deer, Indian Muntjac, Spotted Deer, Sambar, Four-Horned Antelope, Gaur, Wild Boar, Indian Porcupine and Indian Hare are also found. Reptiles include Mugger Crocodile in the Nugu River and Python.
