The district encompasses the site of the remains of the Indus valley civilization, Lothal that existed 4,500 years ago.

Gujarat state's biggest district is the Rann of Kutch.  It is also the State's most sparsely populated one.It is a sandy, barren area over half of which is desert and marshland. Like so many other regions of Gujarat, the Rann of Kutch has its own distinctive character.
