OVERVIEW

About Thimpu

Thimphu is often referred to as the only world capital without traffic lights. A traffic light had once been installed but had to be hastily removed as the residents did not like it!  All buildings are built in traditional Bhutanese style with roofs painted either red or green
   REASONS TO VISIT THIS REGION

Why visit Thimpu

  • Simtokha Dzong Bhutan's most ancient fortified monastery is close by.
Thimphu is surrounded by forested mountains dotted with ancient monasteries and lhakhangs (temples). The town is built on a hill side, up from the Thimphu Chhu river, and is home to the Bhutanese Royal family, the government, the judiciary and to several foreign missions and development projects. Some of the interesting sites to see are the General Post Office, Handicraft Centre, National Library, School of Thangkha paintings, Memorial Chorten and the Handicraft Emporium. The Tashichho Dzong which is the main administrative and religious centre, and which houses the throne room of the king is closed to tourists for the months of April, May and June.
