Why visit Paro
- Bhutan's most famous monastery built precariously high on a cliff face.
- An exquisitely beautiful country
Paro can be considered as one of the smallest town's on earth with an international airport. The valley in which it lies is believed to be one of the first valleys to have embraced Buddhism in the Eastern Himalayas as indicated by the presence of two 7th century temples Kyichu Lhakhang and Taktsang Goemba. In Paro, sightseeing destinations include the old ruined fortress of Drugyel Dzong, Ta Dzong, the National Museum, housed in an ancient watchtower, Rinpung Dzong, or the Fortress of the Heap of Jewels, and Taktsang Monastery's viewpoint. Taktsang meaning "Tiger's Nest", is built around a cave in which Guru Rimpoche (also known as Guru Padmasambhava) considered as the second Buddha, meditated. The eighth century monastery is perched on a rock overlooking a sheer drop and clings to a cliff of rock at 914 meters above the valley floor.
